Houlay (pictured second from the right) learned about Juma Seattle through a flyer posted on a bulletin board at her high school–Global Connections–and she decided to join Juma because she needed help saving money for college. She also wanted a first job that would get her out of the house and experiencing life.
Of her first experience working as a vendor at Safeco Field she says:
“It was super duper fun and I felt like I was in my element… Working at Juma I learned responsibility, how to own up to my actions, different ways to make people smile, how to read body language, and how to achieve my goals.”
Houlay eventually worked her way up to a Cart Manager, leading a team of other youth. In this position, she says she gained leadership skills, improved her customer service, and quality control.
Houlay has since graduated high school and moved onto a position with Amazon as an Associate. She says that her experience as a Manager with Juma helped her get the position and has helped her in her new role. “At Amazon, I have to hold others accountable and be accountable for myself as well–in a similar way to when I was at Juma.”
She is finishing up her Associate Degree in Engineering at Highline College and hopes to then transfer to a four year university. Under consideration are MIT or Washington State University.
