In 1993, Juma Ventures (www.Juma.org) became the first nonprofit organization to own and operate a commercial franchise—a single Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Shop that provided a handful of jobs to low-income youth in San Francisco. Since then, Juma has grown into a nationally-recognized youth development organization operating ten social enterprises in six cities (San Francisco, Oakland, Santa Clara, New York, New Orleans, and Seattle). Position Description:
Juma seeks to hire three (3) Youth Development Coordinators (YDC) – two (2) for the San Francisco team, and one (1) for the Oakland team. A YDC works within a generalist framework to provide community, support, engagement and other interventions to a cohort of youth to help them realize their goals towards post-secondary enrollment, financial understanding, and professional development. YDCs build engaging relationships with a caseload of youth, provide support towards the realization of post-secondary education and other life goals and utilize a variety of methods to assess and evaluate youth progress. YDCs will also utilize research, information about best practices, collaborate with a team of staff, gain youth feedback and other data to help refine and improve the effectiveness of the program. The YDC’s programmatic responsibilities will include participation in recruitment, asset assessments, coordination of resources for youth including referrals to social services, and financial and academic coaching. During the two-year term, YDCs will report to the Bay Area Program Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Builds positive, trusting, and respectful interactions with a caseload of 30 – 35 youth in order to encourage and support youth in their academic and personal needs;
- Utilizes youth development principles in conduct, interventions, and collaboration with young people and in the management of a safe youth space;
- Utilizes Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) software to document and evaluate data, youth input, and best practices to monitor progress, initiate improvement, celebrate success, and improve caseload management;
- Assists in volunteer tutor management;
- Develops partnerships and close relationships with school staff to properly support youths’ academics;
- Mobilizes referrals, family, community, adults and community resources towards achieving youth outcomes;
- Collaborates with other program and evaluation staff to establish program guidelines, processes and program improvements;
- Participates fully in ongoing professional development and collaborations with program team to update, align, improve and deepen activities and tools towards ensuring youth success;
- Develop and facilitate ongoing workshops for academic, professional, and financial preparedness;
- Supervise campus and community visits to enhance academic and professional exposure;
Engage in wrap around services to ensure youth are supported at their schools and workplace;
- Support youth in developing life skills, such as leadership, critical thinking, time management, self-discipline, and communication through advising committees, facilitating workshops, and conducting one-on-one meetings;
- Participate in outreach and recruitment of new cohort of youth;
- Support in hiring and onboarding processes for new staff members and assisting in additional responsibilities with tenure in the agency;
- Coordinate with Enterprise department maintaining business needs and program services to minimize attrition and increase youth retention at the ballpark.
- Participation during some volunteer community days at the ballpark.
- Work closely with Enterprise department during year-round recruitment process; help schedule and lead youth presentations, follow-up with applications and data tracker.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- At least three years’ experience working with youth of color, working class and low income youth and vulnerable populations in a strengths-based and social justice methodology
- Familiarity with Bay Area public schools, community organizations and political landscape
- Ability to communicate clearly and honestly, both in verbal and written forms
- Team player with exceptional interpersonal skills
- Ability to be supportive and provide guidance in a non-judgmental manner
- Demonstrates personal responsibility by meeting commitments on time, accepts accountability, handles changes, sets personal standards and boundaries
- Demonstrates respect and interest in youth leadership and youth culture
- High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information
- Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines
- Ability to use research and data to evaluate program effectiveness
- Self-starter, motivated, and able to take initiative in all situations; ability to function effectively in a fast-paced and inclusive environment.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Drive, social media and other commonly used software
- Familiarity with CSU-UC’s, the college application process, and financial aid is a plus
- Experience with curriculum building and workshop facilitation a plus
- Ability to work nights (until 8pm) and frequent weekend work
- Be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check

Job Details

Starting Salary: $35,000
Start Date: April 1st, 2016 (This is a two-year position)
Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Hours/Week: 40 hours (Usually between 12pm-8pm)
Education: Bachelor’s degree required
